![]() There are varying theories as to why Northampton has come to shelter such a large lesbian community, but they generally converge along the same lines: It is a town, and an area, with a long tradition of strong women. She used to have a "lesbians only" evening but stopped because business was so good, she didn't need to set aside shopping times for any special interest group. "If you offer good quality products, I don't think anybody cares if you're a martian," says Fine, who has owned the Gazebo, a lingerie shop, for 14 years. It isn't important just that they're lesbians-they're doctors, lawyers, interesting human beings." The tendency of the media to focus on the lesbian community is "frustrating," she says, "because the spotlight is being put on only one segment of a very diverse population. "I think people often don't know and therefore don't care (who is lesbian)," says Mary Reutener, director of college relations at Smith College, the prominent women's college here, whose graduates include Nancy Reagan and Barbara Bush.
